Engagement is getting students or young adults more involved in Judaism, not necessarly Hillel of Metro Detroit. Engagement students around Metro Detroit are mostly commuter students. These hold true for all commuter students:
- Their parents are MUCH MORE involved in their lives than that of residential students.
- They have jobs.
- They seem to have no time for Hillel.
- Many live at home with their parents.

What are Empowerment Students?
Empowerment students are already involved at Hillel and in Judaism, in general. They will come to events without much persuasion and they usually hangout at Hillel. Empowerment students at HMD (Hillel of Metro Detroit) hold these things in common:
- Most of them also have jobs and are extremely busy.
- Most do not know how to plan programs, but are eager to learn.
- Some are irresponsible and don't follow through.
